Multilingual Learners at EGPS

Home Language Survey (HLS): Upon enrollment, all students complete an HLS to determine if a language other than English is spoken at home.

Review of Records: Examine prior educational records, language assessments, and any previous participation in language programs.

Initial Screening:

• Administer the state-approved English language proficiency assessment (e.g., WIDA Screener) within 30 days of enrollment (or within 14 days if enrolled during the school year).

• Determine proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Eligibility Determination: If the student is identified as an MLL based on assessment results, they qualify for LIEP services.

Parental Notification:

• Notify parents in writing within 30 days of identification.

• Provide information in the preferred language of the family, outlining program options, goals, and expectations.

Program Placement: Assign the student to an appropriate LIEP model based on language proficiency level, academic needs, and available resources. Our current practice is English as a Second Language (ESL) services.

Differentiated Instruction: Teachers implement instructional strategies tailored to MLL needs, ensuring access to grade-level content and language development.

Collaboration: LIEP Teachers works with general education teachers to provide language accommodations and scaffolding.

Progress Monitoring:

• Conduct formative and summative assessments to track language and academic progress.

• Use data to adjust instruction and provide additional support as needed.

Cultural Responsiveness: Integrate students' cultural backgrounds into the curriculum to promote engagement and inclusivity.

Annual English Proficiency Assessment:

• Administer the state-mandated assessment (ACCESS) to measure progress in English language acquisition.

• Review results to determine if adjustments to services are needed.

Academic Monitoring: Regularly evaluate MLLs' performance in core subjects and adjust support as necessary.

Parent , Family, and Community Engagement: Provide opportunities for parents/families to participate in meetings, workshops, and school events.

Language Accessibility: Ensure all communication is available in families' preferred languages.

Cultural Sensitivity: Foster a welcoming environment that values linguistic and cultural diversity.

Training for Educators: Provide ongoing professional learning on best practices for supporting MLLs, including strategies for differentiated instruction and cultural competency.

Collaboration Opportunities: Encourage interdisciplinary collaboration between LIEP teacher, general education teachers, and administrators.
